What resort style actually means in 2026

Resort style is one of those fashion terms that gets used loosely enough to mean almost anything. In its strictest sense it refers to the pre-spring collections that major fashion houses show in November and December for delivery in the following spring. In its more common usage it means the clothes you wear on a beach holiday. The two definitions overlap more than you might expect.

The resort wardrobe as a distinct category

A resort wardrobe is not just a summer wardrobe taken to a nicer location. It has specific requirements: pieces that transition from beach to restaurant, fabrics that handle humidity and salt air, colours and prints that work in strong light. The best resort wardrobes are built around a small number of versatile pieces rather than a large number of single-use ones.

The core of a resort wardrobe is usually three or four pieces that do double duty: a swimsuit that works as a bodysuit under trousers, a linen shirt that works over a swimsuit and as a standalone top, a wrap skirt that works at the beach and at dinner. Everything else is optional.

What Japanese resort destinations require

Japan's southern islands have a resort culture that is more relaxed than the European model but more covered than the Southeast Asian one. The beach dress code is casual; the restaurant and bar dress code is smart-casual. Swimwear at the beach is normal; swimwear in a restaurant is not, even in resort areas.

This means the cover-up is not optional. It is a functional part of the wardrobe. The pieces worth investing in are the ones that work in both contexts without looking like a compromise.

Building a resort wardrobe on a budget

The most common mistake in resort wardrobe building is buying too many pieces. A well-chosen set of five or six items. Two swimsuits, two cover-ups, one pair of sandals, one bag. Covers most situations for a week-long trip. The money saved by not buying the seventh and eighth pieces is better spent on quality in the core items.

If you are unsure which pieces to prioritise, the Resort Wardrobe Edit is a good starting point. You send us what you have; we tell you what to add.

Resort style is a practical category as much as an aesthetic one. The pieces that work best are the ones that solve real problems. Heat, transitions, activity. While also looking considered.
