Resort style packing for Japan's island destinations

Japan's southern islands. Okinawa, Ishigaki, Amami Oshima. Have a beach culture that is distinct from the resort destinations most international packing guides are written for. The water is warm, the UV index is high even in autumn, and the local dress culture outside the resort areas is more conservative than, say, Bali. Packing well for these destinations means accounting for all of that.

The swimwear question

For the water, the practical considerations are UV protection and security. The UV index in Okinawa is high through October, and a rash guard or a one-piece with good coverage is worth having even if you also bring a bikini. For snorkelling. Which is the main activity on most of the smaller islands. A one-piece or a bikini with a rash guard is more practical than a bikini alone.

On silhouette: the local beach culture is relaxed but not particularly revealing. A bikini is completely normal at the beach; a thong is not. This is worth knowing if you are used to Mediterranean beach norms.

Cover-ups and evening wear

The most common packing mistake for Japan's southern islands is bringing too many swimsuits and not enough real clothes. The evenings in Okinawa, even in summer, are social. There are good restaurants, markets, and bars. And the local dress standard for these contexts is casual but covered.

A linen shirt that works over a swimsuit and also stands alone as an evening top is the most versatile piece you can bring. A midi wrap skirt does the same job on the bottom. One light knit for the evenings covers the temperature drop without taking up much space.

Footwear and accessories

Sandals that can get wet and dry quickly are essential. The paths between beaches and restaurants on the smaller islands are often unpaved, so a sandal with a sole that grips is more useful than a flat slide. A wide-brim hat is worth bringing for the UV; a packable tote bag handles the beach-to-town transition without needing a second bag.
