The beach bag is one of those accessories that gets treated as an afterthought until it fails. The woven tote that falls apart in the salt air, the canvas bag that takes three days to dry after a wave catches it. Choosing the right bag for the right beach context is a small decision with a disproportionate effect on how a beach day goes.
Material: what holds up and what does not
The most durable beach bag materials are nylon, coated canvas, and natural raffia. Nylon dries quickly and handles salt water without degrading; coated canvas is more structured and works better for beach-to-restaurant transitions; raffia is lightweight and breathes well but does not handle getting wet. Uncoated canvas and cotton totes are the most common and the least suitable. They absorb water, take a long time to dry, and tend to develop a salt-stain line at the watermark.
For Japan's southern islands, where the beach day often extends into an evening out, a coated canvas tote or a structured nylon bag is the most versatile choice.
Size and structure
A beach bag needs to be large enough to carry a towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Beyond that, size becomes a liability. A very large bag is harder to keep track of and more likely to collect sand. A medium tote with an interior pocket for small items is the most practical configuration for most beach days.
For active days. Snorkelling, kayaking. A dry bag or a waterproof backpack is more appropriate than a tote. These are not stylish in the conventional sense, but they protect electronics and documents in a way that no tote can.
What to leave behind
The beach is not a good environment for anything you cannot afford to lose or damage. Expensive jewellery, good sunglasses (unless you have a case), and anything with a leather strap should stay at the hotel. A cheap pair of sunglasses and a waterproof phone case are better beach companions than their more expensive equivalents.
The beach bag question is worth thinking about before you pack, not after you arrive. A bag that does not work for the conditions is an irritant for the whole trip.
